Darlene Castro

Executive Director, 2018-2019
Picture
Darlene Castro (b. 1993) is a composer, researcher, and classical guitarist living in Salt Lake City. Her interest in music began with violin studies at a young age, first playing in a youth mariachi band, then in a classical orchestra. Later, she discovered and switched to the classical guitar and subsequently began studying music composition at the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts.

Having recently completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah with a major in composition, she intends to soon continue her studies at the graduate level.

As a champion of new music, she has led and volunteered for arts organizations throughout the Utah Valley that perform modern world as well as premiere works by professional and student Utah composers.

Her arrangements and compositions have been performed by The Running fl'Utes', the Salty Cricket Composers Collective, and members of the Utah Symphony.

As a researcher she has presented her work under the auspices of the American Musicological Society, and has taken part in a week-long seminar on historical music notation at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.

Currently, she serves on the faculty of Westminster College as Artsbridge faculty mentor and classical guitar instructor.
